The Counseling Faculty

The counseling programs have six full-time faculty.  These faculty members comprise a diverse group whose expertise reflects professional experience in a variety of clinical settings, including public schools, university-clinics, mental health settings, and private practice.  All full-time faculty engage in teaching, service, and professional involvements and are committed to providing a challenging and supportive learning environment.


Dr. W. Dale Brotherton

Dale Brotherton serves as Community Counseling Program Leader. Originally from Joplin, Missouri, Dr. Brotherton earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology at Missouri Southern State College. He earned his Master's degree and Certificate of Advanced Study in Counseling at Western Carolina University. His Doctorate is in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University. He joined the faculty at Western Carolina in the fall of 1993.

Dr. Brotherton has five years of public school teaching experience and was assistant professor in counselor education at Montana State University for four years before coming to Western Carolina. His national professional memberships include the American Counseling Association, the Association for Specialists in Group Work, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors, and the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. At the state level, he is member of North Carolina Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, North Carolina School Counselors Association and the North Carolina Specialists in Group Work and the North Carolina Family Based Services Association.

Russell Curtis serves as Coordinator of Field Experiences.  Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Curtis earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Management from North Carolina State University.  He earned his Master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  His doctorate is in Counseling and Counselor Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  He joined the Western Carolina faculty in fall of 2000.

Dr. Curtis has two and one-half years experience working as a mental health counselor in a community mental health center in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  His national professional memberships include the American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Association for Assessment in Counseling, International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors, Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling, Association for Humanistic Education and Development, Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the North Carolina Counseling Association.  Dr. Curtis is a National Certified Counselor.

A native of Forest City, North Carolina, Dr. Deck earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Appalachian State University. She has Masters' degrees in Special Education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and in School Counseling from Western Carolina University. Her doctorate is in Counselor Education from The University of Virginia. She joined the faculty at Western Carolina in the fall of 1990.

Dr. Deck has been employed as a social worker, a special education teacher and a school counselor, and was assistant professor in counselor education at the University of Alabama for four years before coming to Western Carolina. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, the American School Counselor Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the North Carolina Counseling Association and the North Carolina School Counselor Association. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in NC.

A. Michael Dougherty (Ph.D., Indiana State University) is Dean of the College of Education and Allied Professions and Professor of Counseling. He is author of Casebook of Psychological Consultation and Collaboration in School and Community Settings (Fourth Edition), published by Brooks/Cole-Wadsworth Publishing Company.

In addition to fulfilling his duties as Dean, he teaches graduate-level courses in consultation, theories of counseling, and counseling children. He has consulted, taught courses, and made presentations in a variety of international settings including Barbados, Colombia, El Salvador, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, and Jordan.

Lisen Roberts serves as Coordinator of the Counseling Program and Program Leader in School Counseling.  Dr. Roberts joined the Counseling faculty in Fall 2001. Prior to that, she served for four years as Program Director of Child and Family Studies at Western Carolina. Dr. Roberts grew up in upstate New York (with summers in Finland and Martha's Vineyard). From Keene State College, New Hampshire, she has a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Special Education and a Master's degree in Counseling. her doctorate is in Family Studies from the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Roberts has five years public school teaching experience and is a licensed school counselor. She is a member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the National Council on Family Relations, and the Family Science Association.

Phyllis Robertson serves as Advisor in the School Counseling Program and teaches in the counseling core. She joined the Counseling faculty in Summer of 2005.  A native of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Dr. Robertson earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.  She has a Masster’s degree in School Counseling from Western Carolina University.  Her doctorate in Counselor Education is from The University of South Carolina.

Valerie Schwiebert received her Masters Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Specialist Degree in Counseling, and her Doctorate in Counselor Education with a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Florida. Dr. Schwiebert specialized in two areas during her doctoral work, Adult Development and Aging and Death and Dying. 

Dr. Schwiebert has worked as a rehabilitation counselor, researcher for the Area Agency on Aging, and as an administrator of a substance abuse evaluation program for the State of Florida. She worked as an assistant professor in Counseling at Northern Illinois University and had a private practice in Mental Health Counseling. She joined the WCU faculty in the fall, 1995. Dr. Schwiebert is a National Certified Counselor, National Certified Gerontological Counselor, and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. She was president of the Illinois Association for Assessment in Counseling. Nationally, she is active in the Association for Adult Development and Aging, the Association for Assessment in Counseling, and Chi Sigma Iota. She is the recipient of the AADA and Chi Sigma Iota Research awards for her research in the area of adult children providing care giving for aging parents.
