Publishing: 2.05 Set-up of SeaMonkey (Netscape) Preferences

This is very important to your piece of mind. Both SeaMonkey (Netscape 7.2 and Netscape 4.7) have a special Preferences setting that needs to be cancelled as it is generally in the wrong default setting.  Find the correct heading for the version being used.

Search the menu bar for a pull-down menu (generally Edit) that leads to Preferences

    SeaMonkey 1.1

In the 1.1 version, click Edit in the menu bar then Preferences. From this list of items click the Triangle symbol in front of the word Composer and then the word Composer itself. Check to see that there is not a checkmark and if it is there, remove the checkmark in front of Save Images and other associated files when saving pages. Once set at home, this will not have to be repeated. But in public labs on campus, this may have to be fixed every time as the rebooting the computer erases the change made the previous week or session.

    Netscape 7.2

In the 7.2 version, click Edit in the menu bar then Preferences. From this list of items click the Triangle symbol in front of the word Composer and then the word Composer itself. Click on the checkmark to remove the checkmark in front of Save Images and other associated files when saving pages. Once set at home, this will not have to be repeated. But in public labs on campus, this will have to be fixed every time as the rebooting the computer erases the change made the previous week or session.

    Netscape 4.7

In the 4.x versions, from the Preferences list of items click the Plus sign in front of the word Composer and when Publish appears, select it by clicking on it. Click on the checkmarks to remove the checkmarks in front of Maintain Links and Keep Image with Page.

In the 6.x and later versions, from the Preferences list of items click the word Composer. In the dialog box that appears, click on the checkmarks to remove the checkmarks in front of Maintain Links and Keep Image with Page.

If this is not done, when Edit the Page is chosen, absolute addresses will be automatically inserted, making the pages work well on one server, but not on another server.  Also, using Edit the Page will cause images linked to the page to be downloaded or saved in the same place as the file you are editing, which will change the link pathway to the images, causing it to no longer match the relationships to subfolders on your web site. OK, so this paragraph is too complicated for many to understand. Just get rid of the checkmarks and move on.

Once this is done on your home or office computer, the next time the computer is used, this will not have to be done again as Netscape will remember those changes.

But if you are sitting down to a computer in an electronic classroom or a lab that is new to you, check the Preference settings to see if the checkmarks need to be removed. Many public labs run security software that prevent the user from make any lasting changes to the default settings. That is, if you make the changes on a public computer workstation, as soon as the computer is restarted, the settings go back to the original default settings.

That is, every time you come to class and use Netscape Composer, you will need to make this change in Preferences. Once the change is made at home, it does not need to be repeated.
