Creating: Step 2.1 - Copy Templates

These template files  will need to be modified and completed for your web site. They are in addition to the three files that were provided in chapter one. There are many ways to copy the template files needed for this assignment: from a class folder on Appserver to your diskettes: direct drive-to-drive campus copy from one diskette to another; copy from a web page; browser window through WIN to Appserver. Any one of these approaches will do.

    Web Page Copy

    • web site links - web templates files. Watch out! The windows operating system will often remove the final character of the file extension. That is when you copy unitview.html it will set up the file name to be saved as unitview.htm, so watch for it and add the letter l so that it becomes unitview.html. The links in the files being downloaded will work if the extension on the file is set correctly. Click this link to open, then follow the directions there to save each of the files as HTML source code.

Save this file to your web folder along with the rest of the collection of your web pages.

Here are instructions for other approaches to distributing computer files that are not being used at this time.

    Direct Drive-to-Drive On-Campus Copy

The fastest way is for an instructor to enable the entire folder of files to be copied at once from an institutional server. At WCU Appserver has a folder for instructors called Class. One would scroll the list of folders in the Class folder until their class was found. Within that folder would be a Pickup folder.  Students would open the sub-folder called Pickup and copy the contents of the folder there called Web to the folder you created on your diskette called Web.

Here's how this might look if you set this up for your students.
    1. Open a window to your personal diskette so that you can see the Web folder that you created.
    2. Next open a second window to our Appserver online course Web folder and resize this window so that you can still see the first window. Reaching the online course Web folder takes several steps. On campus, the connection to Appserver can be found:
      • on a Win computer inside the Network Neighborhood icon or the My Computer icon found on the desktop screen.
      • on the desktop of a Mac computer or can be selected from Chooser under the Apple icon in Finder's menu bar
    3. Click on and open the Appserver symbol or icon.
    4. Select and open the Class folder. [On Macintosh computers, click the triangle in front of the folders, which eliminates the screen clutter of numerous open folders.
    5. Scroll down the list of class folders, and select and open the EDEL466 folder for your section.
      • Important note: with most operating systems, you can type in the first letters of the file or folder you are seeking, which takes you directly to files and folders which start with those letters.
      • Try it by typing in EDEL466 once the Class folder is open. This saves considerable time in searching through long file lists.
    6. Select and open the Pickup folder.
    7. Select and open the Web folder in the pickup folder.
    8. Resize and position your windows so that you can see both the Web folder in the window on your diskette and the opened course Web folder in the Pickup folder.
    9. Fast network day:
      1. Next, click and drag around the files to select all the files in the Web folder.
      2. Click on any one of those selected files and drag it into the window for the diskette. All files will now be automatically copied from the network server to your diskette.
      3. When finished, carefully check to see that you have the same number of files in each window.
    10. Slow network day:
      1. Click on any one of those selected files and drag it into the window for the diskette.
      2. When it appears in your destination folder, click and drag over another one.
      3. When the whole class is copying files over the network at the same time, the Appserver computer runs very slow, so be patient.

    Browser Window to Appserver

You could also use a Web Browser to copy the files over the Internet, allowing you to be off-campus and carry out this activity. To do so, connect to the WCU home page at http://www.wcu.edu.
      To move the files:
    1. Click the link called WIN.
    2. Select Appserver1 link under Student Services.
    3. Enter your student ID number and password and indicate your student status.
    4. The Appserver Classes File Access page will appear. Under the Pick Up File... heading, select your EDEL466 section.
    5. Select the folder called Pick-Up.
    6. Click on View file list.
    7. From the list of files that appear, select a file then click the button at the bottom titled Retrieve the Marked File. Your computer will ask you to select the location to place these files. Select the Web folder on your disk. Repeat this process until all files are copied.
    8. This procedure works from campus as well, but working through web pages can be much slower.
