Web Servers
There is an important distinction to make between Web Server and Web Browser (e.g., Netscape, Mosaic, etc.) software. Computers on the network that run server software act like the restaurant kitchen. Personal computers that run browser software act as the restaurant ordering system. A click on a link in a browser program tells a particular restaurant's kitchen on the network to serve up a particular file from that kitchen to a particular table, e.g. your personal computer.
Locations for Mac Server Software
- Starnine Technologies, Inc.. (phone - (800) 525-2580. Webstar has a clear lead over the competition for Mac Web servers.
- MacHTTP 2.0 from BIAP, but they have transferred their update to Starnine for distribution and labeled it Webstar. 2.0 works and is cheaper and adequate, but less powerful, slower, with less support.
- Netwings, Inc., their Netwings is $1,500 and is built on top of the database 4th Dimension, a powerful relational database engine.
- InterServer Publisher., has added support for Open Transport. (Phone - (800) 468-7266).
- Macweek, Ten essential steps for setting up a Web site, which includes a listing of Apple based servers at the end of the article.

Other Server Support Tools
In order for your documents to be visible and distributable on a local or global network, they must be placed in a Web server. Either you must run the software on a workstation that you control, or you must have it placed on someone else's server.
But, you can work without a server, by working in local mode. Instead of pulling files of the network, your links fetch them from your own hard drive. Using a projection panel and a Web browser like Netscape, NCSA Mosaic, MacWeb on a Mac or Cello or NCSA Mosaic or Netscape on a Windows platform, you have a presentation tool for lectures and other large group work.
Many businesses now provide specialized software to help in the production and management of Web sites. Some of their Web sites are noted below:
BASIS Webserver, advertised as industrial strength document management. Use this link to test drive their product and gather more information.
IBM's Firewalls, firewalls filter messages and limit ingoing and outgoing transmissions between a company and the Internet.
SmartWall, from Virtual Open Network Environment, with firewall protection and a user authentication system.
Rockwell Telecommunication's Fastlink, which facilitates adding dial-up links to your client/server network.
