Community Events - NetDay96, Jackson County, NC Part 3 of 3
NetDay96 - Part 1 - NetDay96 - Part 2 - NetDay96 - Part 3
All participants were treated to a fabulous lunch at Grandma's Kitchen in Cherokee, North Carolina, just down the highway. You too can help! Sign up to volunteer to help out on November 9 and November 16 for the next sets of school wiring projects, NetDay96 part II and part III. If you cannot donate your time, donate money for wiring kits and cables to Peggy Wike, Jackson County Schools, 586-2311 ext. 226
After lunch and hours more of pulling wires, results began to show in the wiring closet. Some day, a fiber strand will come down the highway and connect this building's internal wiring to the state's Virtual Valley, a mountain to the sea computer network for the 21st century. Randy Gogolin showed his technique in installation to many participants. Punch down blocks are used to split and connect the four strands of wire inside every cable of wire that was drawn from the classrooms.
Every classroom has its own terminating punch down block in the wiring closet. An elated but worn Computer Coordinator exults at the number of classrooms from which he did not have to personally pull wire. He extends his heartfelt thanks to all those that came! He hopes to see many again in other school district buildings in the weeks ahead. Finally, back at the College's Instructional Technology Center, a dust and insulation covered Dr. Houghton finds it takes as long to build these web pages as it did to install wire in an entire wing of a school building.
But Dr. Houghton knows and his students know that we were just one building team among many others all across the state that have stories to tell. This effort will pay off in numerous ways. A day will come: when elementary students can have the high speed access and opportunity that University students enjoy; when those studying to teach can have hourly contact with those learning and engaged in teaching; when community homes, public offices, businesses, K-12 schools, community colleges and universities can share a harvest of Still Unsolved Problems and contributions to their solutions. He too extends a heartfelt thanks to his participating students!
