"NC TEACH is a great way to get mid-career professionals ready to step into the classroom. The biggest surprise to me was the emotional reward of teaching. I should have done this 15 years ago."          - Susan Dryman

NC TEACH (North Carolina Teachers of Excellence for All Children) is an alternative teacher preparation program for recent college graduates, mid-career professionals and retirees. Western is one of the original NC TEACH sites established in 2000.

NC TEACH at Western Carolina University opens  the door for those who are ready for  the challenge of teaching. NC TEACHers can take licensure courses in person, online or blend both to fit their schedules. Our courses also fulfill a portion of the requirements for a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) allowing participants to work toward an advanced  degree at the same time they’re completing licensure coursework.

Through Western’s Center for the Support of Beginning Teachers, NC TEACHers  receive support and encouragement virtually and/or onsite to step up to the head of the class  during those critical first years of teaching.  WCU provides the NC TEACH II option for teachers interested in teaching in high-need areas. Western offers courses leading to licensure in:

Birth-Kindergarten

Elementary

English as a Second Language

Middle grades (6-9) and Secondary (9-12):

English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies

K-12 Art Education

K-12 Music Education

K-12 Physical Education
