Eligibility Requirements for licensure-only, graduate-level applicants

• Undergraduate degree from accredited college or university in the major of the concentration or 24 hours of content coursework
• Meet prerequisite requirements of the department
• Minimum 2.75 GPA (4.0 scale) on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work.  (If your GPA is less than 2.75, you may follow our undergraduate program. Contact our office for information on the undergraduate application process.)
• Interview

• Admission into Western’s graduate program

**The requirements for licensure-only students do not guarantee entrance in Masters Degree programs.  If a student chooses to pursue a Masters Degree he/she must meet the specific requirements of the desired program.

Transcript Review

For a transcript review, complete the Eligibility/Pre-Evaluation form online (http://www.ceap.wcu.edu/ncteach/ncteacheval.html) and submit one official copy of transcripts. A program advisor will develop a plan of study that will satisfy licensure requirements. The checklist will be mailed to you.

Application Process

To expedite the application process while you are waiting on your checklist, submit the following:

  --WCU graduate application: http://www.wcu.edu/196.asp including $40.00 application fee

• Apply as a teacher certification student
• Select your area of license (English, mathematics, science, social studies, special education)
• Select distance-learning if you plan to take courses online or at a distance learning site (i.e. Pisgah High School)
• If you plan to take courses on the Cullowhee campus, UNC-A or at the Cherokee Center do not select “distance” on your application
• Indicate NC TEACH

  --Personal Statement, one-page statement addressing:

1) Why do you want to become a teacher?

2) What strengths and skills will you bring to teaching?
