Professional Development
As the partnership prepares high quality professional educators,
it is enhancing the development of teacher leaders and school
administrators. Teacher leaders work closely as school-based
teacher educators and expand their professional networks.
SUTEP
works with other partners to support teachers seeking National
Board Certification. There are information
sessions for pre-candidates and workshops for candidates.
Some of the sessions are provided regionally to save driving
time for the teachers. The Professional Development Committee
makes recommendations for the types of professional development
activities that are offered. Technology workshops are popular
because teachers are interested and can receive technology
license renewal credits.
Teachers and teams of teachers have opportunities to apply
for action research grants and/or school improvement grants.
These grants target enhancing student achievement in P-12
schools. There are additional ways to involve university faculty
in working with public school teachers on mutually beneficial
activities. There are many ways to support teacher leaders.
Some teachers are employed to team teach methods courses,
curriculum courses, or internship seminars with university
faculty. Some of these partnerships have led to joint presentations
at state and national conferences and professional publications.
