Recruitment

North Carolina public schools will need over 100,000 new teachers in the next 10 years. NC teacher education programs graduate approximately 3,000 teachers annually. this meets only 30% of the 10,000 teachers needed each year in NC. The Recruitment Committee is commited to supporting teaching as a profession and exploring creative recruitment initiatives.

SUTEP collaborates with Western North Carolina schools to assist in recruiting teachers for P-12 schools. With school systems and other programs, we offer the following initiatives:

  • The Teacher Cadet Program partnerships with area schools and the Office for Rural Education (ORE)
  • Teachers of Tomorrow Day with the ORE and Teaching Fellows
  • Reach to Teach with the WCU Cherokee Center, the ORE and Teaching Fellows
  • Guest speakers, resources, school visits, and university student visits, with ORE and Teaching Fellows to promote teaching as a profession
